The Advantages of Memory Foam Pillows

!±8± The Advantages of Memory Foam Pillows

Along with the success of mattresses and mattress pads made of memory foam came the advent of the memory foam pillow. Made of the same gel-like polyurethane compound that both cushions and supports the contours of your body, memory foam pillows are a great way to rest your neck and head. Say goodbye to neck aches, both at home and on the road. With a memory foam pillow, you can say goodbye to a lot of the neck aches and cranial pressure points associated with regular cotton pillows. Memory foam pillows come in a variety of shapes and thicknesses.

A memory foam contour pillow, often called a Swedish neck pillow, is filled with thousands of microscopic "cells" that can deform under pressure. When you rest your neck, shoulders, or head on it, the air in the deformed cells moves to neighboring cells, creating contours that obey your shape. Many manufacturers of memory foam mattresses and mattress pads offer memory foam pillows as well. They range in price from to 0; ask your local or online dealer for their prices.

Just as with all memory foam products, memory foam pillows vary in density. They can come as low as 2.5 pounds per cubic foot, or as high as 5.3 pounds per cubic foot. Since your head weighs less than your body, you'll probably want a mid-range density material: somewhere between 3.5 and 4.5-weight.

When you're on the road, in a train, or flying, try taking a memory foam travel pillow with you. These can either be rectangular like a regular pillow, or U-shaped, to wrap behind your neck. The U-shaped version will keep your head from falling and causing cricks in the neck, while providing plenty of healthy support for the small bones of your face. If you don't have the strength or space available to pack your memory foam mattress pad into a duffel bag and tote it around, you can still take the comfort and support of memory foam to go, with a very portable memory foam pillow.

How Sleep Affects Our Skin

!±8± How Sleep Affects Our Skin

Sleep is a "natural, temporary loss of consciousness" (Robinson, 1941) necessary for our bodies to build up energy reserves and regenerate body cells and tissues. During sleep, the heart beats more slowly, breathing becomes slower, growth hormones peak, muscles relax and body temperature lowers. Newborn infants sleep almost continuously, gradually decreasing their need for sleep. In early childhood, 12 to 13 hours of sleep are generally required and this amount decreases to approximately 8 hours in adulthood. After the age of 50, sleep is often characterized by frequent night time wakenings, shorter dream lengths and less overall sleep (Bricklen, 1990).

Many consider sleep to be of low priority among the many daily activities engaged in. It is estimated that the world's population is depriving itself of one less hour of sleep per night than is needed (Awake!, 2004). Despite this view of night-time rest, sleep is a necessary, sophisticated process regulated by the brain. Operating as a 24- hour clock, chemical substances, such as melanin, are released in the body to trigger sleepiness.

There are two main stages of sleep classified according to eye movement. The first is REM or rapid eye movement which is a shallow, dream-filled sleep. There are four sub-stages within REM sleep. The first sub-stage lasts 30 seconds to 7 minutes, and during this time the muscles relax while the brain produces irregular wave activity. The second sub-stage lasts 20 percent of the night and brain waves become larger as the body is asleep. The next sub-stage is called delta sleep, where growth hormones peak, and cell and tissue repair take place.

Without delta sleep, which accounts for half of a night's sleep, one will feel tired the next day. Every 90 minutes the brain enters the dream sub-stage, where brain wave activity is similar in pattern to being awake, but muscles are not able to move as when awake. This stage lengthens each repeated cycle during the night, and is crucial to preserving mental health and long term memory, since the brain sorts through short term memory and 'deletes' unimportant data. The second major stage of sleep is non-REM, or non rapid eye movement, where blood pressure drops and heart rate slows as the person enters a deep sleep.

Short term sleep deprivation causes little physical harm, since the body compensates for the lack of sleep by increasing its adrenaline levels during the day. The body also attempts to get more sleep at a later time. A temporary shift in attitude may occur, such as feelings of pessimism or negativity (Bricklin, 1990). Sleep deprivation, even short term, can be dangerous if driving a car, or operating machinery. Sleep deprivation is thought to be the cause of half of all traffic fatalities on U.S. highways, and being awake 17 to 19 hours can cause the same limited reaction and ability as having a 0.05 percent blood alcohol limit (Awake! 2004). It is also implicated in many workplace accidents.

Chronic sleep deprivation, which is caused by prolonged shortages of sleep, can lead to paranoia or hallucinations. This is also termed 'sleep debt', and is characterized by irregular sleep patterns that do not allow the body to enter delta sleep. This can bring on a short attention span, memory and vocabulary loss as well as other symptoms. Among women aged 25-50 who tend to be "perfectionists", many tend to suffer from shallow sleep as the wake centre of the brain remains active when it should be relatively inactive. Other complications from sleep deprivation include obesity, premature aging, fatigue, chronic memory loss and increased risk for diabetes, infection, cardiovascular disease and gastrointestinal disease. It is important, therefore, to obtain an adequate amount of sleep each night, since sleep also helps the body metabolize free radicals, which are thought to accelerate aging and cancerous growths.

Obtaining a good night's rest can be achieved. The following are suggestions to help towards the goal of night-time rest:

- Avoid stimulants like caffeinated drinks before bed.

- Avoid eating a heavy meal at night. A light snack might help if hunger causes you to wake up at night.

- Create a pleasant, warm (body temperature drops when sleepy), noise-free bedroom with a comfortable mattress and pillow.

- Avoid exercise before bed, however, regular exercise during the day aids sleep.

- Avoid activities that increase anxiety, such as considering financial matters or discussing serious problems before bed.

- If possible, a quick daytime nap lasting 20 to 30 minutes can impart positive physiological benefits. Prolonged naps impair sleep at night and may cause insomnia.

- If experiencing insomnia, try getting up and engaging in another activity for a brief time and then attempt sleep again.

- A warm glass of milk contains tryptophan, a natural substance thought to aid sleep.

- Keep the bedroom dark, since the area of the brain which controls the sleep cycle is close to the optic nerves and thus sensitive to light (feeling awake) and dark (feeling sleepy).

- Quit smoking, which increases blood pressure, heart rate and brain wave activity.

How can you know if you are a healthy sleeper?

- Sleep comes easily at night.

- You rarely wake up during the night and can fall back asleep with ease.

- You wake at the same time each morning without an alarm.

- You feel alert during the day and do not feel the need to nap.

Getting a good night's rest refreshes the body, mind and attitude. It is as vital to our health as good food and exercise. The phrase "beauty rest" is more than a quaint idea, it is a fundamental task in the quest for external and internal beauty.

Normal Daily Hair Loss - When is it Not Normal? When Should You Seek Treatments?

!±8± Normal Daily Hair Loss - When is it Not Normal? When Should You Seek Treatments?

It is a must for everybody to have an idea of their normal daily hair loss. We lose hair, everyday. It is not a rare instance to find hair clinging to your hands when you wash your crowning glory. So what is normal and what is not? When should you take action?

Normal daily hair loss: When does it become excessive? How do you know it is excessive?

Did you know that normal hair loss actually varies from person to person? Well it does vary from person to person depending on the density of their locks and the hair color.

An average person has about 100,000 hair follicles. But this can increase or decrease depending on your natural hair color. It has been researched that blondes have the highest density with over 140,000 follicles.

Brunettes or those with black hair have 110,000 hair follicles. The lowest density goes to redheads with 90,000 follicles.

Our tresses go into three phases: anagen, catagen and telogen. The anagen phase is the "growing" phase of a human hair. Almost all of our tress strands are in this stage for a period of 2-5 years. There are some people who can grow their tresses until shoulder length only (shorter anagen cycle) and there are those who can grow theirs up to their ankles (longer anagen cycle)-this is all because of the anagen phase.

The catagen phase is known as the regression stage. This is the transition between growing and resting stage. Only 1% of our tress strands goes into this phase and usually lasts for about 2-3 weeks.

Telogen is the last phase and this is known as the resting stage of our tresses. It can last for 3-4 months but only 10-15% of our hair can go to this stage.

Experts say that if you have shorter anagen phase, you normally lose more hair than others. If you are blonde and you have a short anagen phase, more than 120 hairs per day may be normal for you.

Since it is difficult to really figure out how much hair we should be losing per day, you just have to carefully notice big differences. For instance, when you wake up and you notice more hair on your pillow than before or when you wash your hair and a lot of strands are falling out, this could mean you are losing more strands than usual. If you ponytail your locks and you notice a significant thinning but without any bald patches, this could mean you are having excessive tress fall.

If you go beyond what you deem is a normal daily hair loss, then this is the time to act on it. You should backtrack and think about the time you first noticed this happening. It could be stress, it could be poor nutrition, it could be genetics or it could be DHT.

Don't be afraid to raise your concern to your physician. The earlier this problem can be resolved, the better.

So if you are suspecting that you are losing more hair than the normal daily hair loss, go to your doctor and discuss the potential treatment for your problem such as hair products like provillus or procerin. The important thing is for you to find a treatment right away to prevent it from getting worse.

The Many Different Simmons Beautyrest Mattresses

!±8± The Many Different Simmons Beautyrest Mattresses

The Simmons Beautyrest product line features several different mattress models. These include the Classic, Anniversary, World Class, Exceptionale, NxG, and Black. Most are available in size from twin to king and vary widely with respect to price. Mattress comfort/support levels for the different models generally range from firm to plush to pillow top.

Classic
The Classic is the most affordable of the Beautyrest mattresses and like all Beautyrests it features the patented Beautyrest Super Pocketed Coil springs. These springs are individually encased in material and since the springs are not attached to one another, there is motion separation between one sleeper and the other. The coil count for the Classic is 800 based on a queen size mattress. Certain models of the classic also include memory foam.

Anniversary
The Beautyrest Anniversary has a coil count of 850 and comes with an energy foam support base. Edge support is provided by Simmons Surround Beauty-Edge foam and, like the Classic, certain models of the Anniversary also include memory foam.

World Class
The Simmons Beautyrest World Class has an increased coil count of 1000 and like the Anniversary it uses Simmons Surround Beauty-Edge foam for edge support. Select World Class mattresses come with NxG Memory Foam and Progressive Support Latex. Foam quilting also increases the comfort of the mattress.

Exceptionale
The Exceptionale features two stories of coils yielding an impressive coil count of 1960 (980 coils per story). Edge support is provided by 3 inches of high density foam, and support and comfort are enhanced by levels of visco-memory foam and latex foam. The Exceptionale is also made more comfortable with the addition of stretch knit fabrics blended together with yarns.

NxG
The NxG has a coil count of 1000 and it uses advanced memory foam that, according to Simmons, increases heat dissipation and provides quicker recovery. Like the Anniversary and the World Class, the NxG uses Surround Beauty-Edge foam for edge support. It also has an energy foam base and uses other high performance foams for comfort and support.

Black
The Beautyrest Black mattress is the top-end of the Beautyrests. Within the Black mattress stable there are three different firm mattresses, three different plush mattresses, and four different pillow-top mattresses. They are all covered by a 20 year limited warranty. The Black uses high-end fabrics like cashmere and modal yarns and it also has slightly different coils (Variform Advanced Pocketed Coils) that are described by Simmons as triple woven pocketed coil springs that are interspersed with softer or firmer regular Beautyrest Pocketed Coil springs. This approach is said to increase mattress strength and conformability.

All of the Beautyrest mattresses have a "no flip" design, meaning that the mattress has a single sleeping surface and it is not required to flip the mattress. Most are also available in a range of sizes from twin to king and have several comfort options including firm, luxury firm, plush, plush/firm and pillow top.

About Consumer Mattress Reviews
Reviews for mattresses can be a bit tricky, as they usually revolve around comfort, a decidedly subjective term. But when many consumer reviews indicate that a make or model is extremely comfortable, "like sleeping on a cloud", it probably is. By the same token, when a significant number complain about the same specific feature or characteristic, consider it a red flag.

Negative mattress comments often revolve around how a mattress holds up over time, alluding to mattress sagging or permanent impressions. Also, poor customer service frequently gets written up. Positive reviews commonly relate to mattress comfort and durability. One thing to consider when reading reviews and ratings is that folks may be quicker to complain than to praise, and this can lead to a negative bias.

Simmons Beautyrest Pros and Cons
Consumer reviews of the Simmons Beautyrest mattresses are something of a mixed bag. Most reviewers find the mattresses extremely comfortable but more than a few comment on the fact that in a seemingly short period of time some models begin to exhibit depressions, sometimes deep. A few owners have also complained that their Beautyrest mattress began to feel lumpy after a while. While the warranties on these mattresses are between 10 and 20 years, and Simmons and its retailers for the most part appear to provide respectable customer service, a few consumers expressed displeasure with claims. Some owners had placed claims for a new mattress due to depressions in the mattress, only to have them denied on the grounds that depressions and sagging were to be expected with the passage of time.

Still, the majority of consumers seem pleased with their choice of mattress, indicating satisfaction with the overall comfort and support the mattresses provide. Most consumers are also happy with the individually wrapped coil system technology which does a very good job of keeping the movement of one person from disturbing the sleep of another. A number also comment favorably on the price, indicating they feel Simmons Beautyrest mattresses provide good value for the money.

Pricing
Since the Simmons Beautyrest line features many different mattress models, a wide range of prices is to be expected. Prices range from five or six hundred dollars to several thousand dollars, although some experts suggest that one not need spend more than about eight hundred dollars for a good quality mattress.
